The things you need to know about hand and nail care

Your hands are one of the hardest-working parts of your body, yet they’re often the most neglected. From constant washing to exposure to harsh weather and cleaning chemicals, hands and nails take a daily beating. A dedicated hand and nail care routine isn’t a luxury—it’s essential for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin and strong, beautiful nails.

Hand Care: A Three‑Step Ritual

Healthy hands rely on three key products working together: scrubs, masks, and creams.

1. Hand Scrub (Exfoliation)

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and smooths texture by stimulating cell turnover and improving blood circulation. For best results, exfoliate your hands once a week. Start by soaking your hands in warm water for a few minutes to soften the skin. Apply a gentle scrub in small circular motions for about 30 seconds, then rinse and pat dry. You can use a commercial product or a DIY version—a simple mix of sugar and olive oil works beautifully.

2. Hand Mask (Deep Treatment)

After exfoliation, a hand mask delivers intense hydration. Look for masks containing paraffin, shea butter, and ceramides, which deeply condition and lock in moisture. Apply the mask generously, slip your hands into a pair of cotton gloves, and leave on for 15–20 minutes (or overnight for severe dryness). The heat from the gloves helps the ingredients penetrate deeper, leaving your hands feeling baby-soft.

3. Hand Cream (Daily Moisturizer)

Daily moisturizing is non‑negotiable. The skin on your hands lacks oil glands, making it prone to dehydration—especially in winter when indoor heating strips moisture from the air. Choose a cream rich in shea butter (a powerful emollient), glycerin (a humectant that draws in moisture), and ceramides (which rebuild the skin barrier). Apply immediately after every hand wash to lock in hydration, and keep a tube by your sink and in your bag. For overnight repair, apply a thick balm containing 20% or higher shea butter, wear cotton gloves, and wake up to dramatically softer hands.

Nail & Cuticle Care

Your nails are just as important as the skin around them. Weak, brittle nails and ragged cuticles can ruin even the most beautiful manicure.

Daily hydration is critical. Cuticle oil is the single most effective product for nail health. It hydrates the skin around nails, preventing dryness, cracking, and peeling. Regular application also softens cuticles, making them easier to manage without cutting (which can lead to infection). Massaging the oil into your cuticles improves blood circulation to the nail matrix, promoting stronger, faster nail growth. Even if you wear polish, daily oiling keeps your nails flexible and prevents breakage.

How often should you apply? Experts recommend applying cuticle oil at least once daily, but ideally two to three times a day—morning, night, and after every hand wash. For natural oils, look for formulas containing jojoba, almond, or avocado oil, which closely mimic the skin’s own sebum and absorb quickly without greasiness. Avoid products with synthetic fragrances or preservatives if you have sensitive skin.

Beyond oil: Keep nails trimmed and shaped to prevent breakage and hangnails. Use a fine‑grit nail file and always file in one direction—sawing back and forth creates micro‑tears that lead to peeling. And never use your nails as tools; opening cans or peeling stickers puts lateral pressure on the nail plate, causing splits and chips.

Nail Strengthening

If your nails are naturally soft, peel easily, or break at the slightest bump, you may need a dedicated nail strengthener.

What they do. Nail strengtheners are formulated to fortify weak, brittle nails, potentially also helping them grow faster. “Over‑the‑counter nail strengtheners can effectively protect and strengthen brittle or damaged nails,” says Dr. Pooja Rambhia, board‑certified dermatologist. These products typically contain keratin and biotin, which reinforce nail structure and enhance thickness.

How to use them. Look for formulas containing plant keratin, AHA, silicon, and vitamins B8 and C. Apply the serum once or twice daily for a week, then occasionally for maintenance. Most lightweight serums absorb instantly, so you don’t have to wait around with greasy fingers. For best results, use a strengthener during a break between gel or acrylic applications, as you’ll need to go without polish for a few days while the treatment works.

What to expect. Strengthening is not instant. With consistent use for about a month, you’ll notice nails feeling less bendy, smoother, and significantly less prone to breaking. For ongoing maintenance, you can also use a strengthening base coat under your regular nail polish.

A Complete Weekly Hand & Nail Routine

  • Daily: Apply cuticle oil twice a day. Moisturize hands with a rich cream after every wash. Wear gloves for dishwashing and cleaning.
  • Weekly: Exfoliate hands with a gentle scrub, then apply a hand mask for 15–20 minutes. File and shape nails, smoothing rough edges.
  • Monthly: Give nails a break from polish for a few days and apply a strengthening serum to rebuild their natural resilience.

Consistency is everything. With just a few minutes of care each day, you can transform dry, tired hands and brittle nails into a soft, strong, and beautifully groomed pair you’ll be proud to show off.
